Where do peanuts hide?

Peanuts are legumes and are labelled separately from tree nuts. They’re in peanut butter, satay and other Asian sauces, cereal bars, chocolate, biscuits and snacks, and in peanut oil. Even small amounts can cause a serious reaction, so it matters that they’re on the label and that traces from shared production get caught.

The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
