What counts as molluscs?

Molluscs are mussels, oysters, scallops, squid, octopus and snails. They’re in oyster sauce, seafood dishes, paella and soups. Molluscs are a different allergen from crustaceans such as prawns and crab, though some people react to both.

The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
