Which nuts must be on the label?
The label must name almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios and macadamia nuts. Coconut and peanuts aren’t included. Tree nuts hide in marzipan, nougat, pesto, muesli, cakes, chocolate and vegetarian products.
The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
