Where does soya hide?
Soya is in soy sauce, tofu, vegetarian and vegan products, bread, chocolate and processed meat, and appears as soya flour, soya protein and soya lecithin (E322). Fully refined soybean oil is exempt from labelling because the protein has been removed.
The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
