Where does sesame hide?
Sesame comes as seeds on bread, rolls and crispbread, as tahini in hummus and dressings, and as sesame oil in Asian food. Traces can come from bakeries and production lines that use sesame for other products.
The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
