What counts as crustaceans?
Crustaceans are prawns and shrimp, crab, lobster, langoustine and crayfish. They’re in seafood salads, ready meals, soups and stocks, and in shrimp paste and other Asian seasonings. Crustaceans are a different allergen from molluscs such as mussels and squid.
The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
