Where does fish hide?
Besides fish itself, it turns up in fish sauce, surimi, Caesar dressing, Worcestershire sauce (anchovies), Asian pastes and some supplements. Fish allergy often lasts for life, and some people react to the steam from cooking it.
The 14 allergens that EU law requires on food labels must be emphasised in the ingredients list, usually in bold. When one is missing from the label, or has got into the food by mistake, the producer recalls it and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration publishes the recall. “May contain traces of” is voluntary and doesn’t guarantee anything either way.
